Apostle Islands - Day3

We woke up nice and early and decided to take the ferry to the biggest island on the national lakeshore - Madeline Island. The ferries ran from the Bayfield dock to the Madeline Island every 20mins or so and it was a 20 min trip to the island from the mainland.

Well, the first thing we did was to go back to the snack place from yesterday for our camera - and surely the nice lady had kept it for us. Phew ! - I was relieved. So after breakfast we boarded the ferry with the car and reached Madeline Island.

So we reached the Madeline Island and figured out there are two major state parks on the island. So we started off to the Big Bay State Park first. We decided to drive there.

We reached the state park and did some hiking trails along the shore of the lake and spent some time on the beach - we did not venture to play in the water as the water was still chill cold out there. It was beautiful and we really did some beautiful hiking and much fun was had!

So after spending a good part of the morning we left the island and took the ferry back to the mainland and decided we wanted to check out the fresh farms and orchards in Bayfield as there were lots of them there.

So on our way back we stopped at one of the farm and orchard which had a quaint little store. The store was run by two sweet old women - and told us that the store opened just this weekend for the season. It was still too soon in the year for cherries and strawberries, so we decided to just explore the store which had all the kitchen items and lots of homemade goods. The lady offered fresh hot donuts that she had just made in front of us. Hard to say no to :), we spent a good hour there and bought a few bottles of homemade jam and jelly. Another thing that I really liked about the store was the kick ass messages on mugs, aprons, magnets etc. One that really caught my eye was "If it has tires or testicles, its bound to give trouble!" - it made my day!

We left the place and started our drive back to Chicago - it was a wonderful weekend!

Great times there - you guys rock when it comes to finding these new places. I hadn't heard about this Apostle islands at all! Nice post. One of the views in your Kayaking snaps with that arched Rock, was just awesome! The best part was of population being 615!! thats so unheard of, and makes it all the more interesting to get away from the wild crowds :)
